Brutal and beautiful today. Two HC climbs, and the road surfaces were mostly bad. Started out of town climbing to the highest point on Grand Canary Island at 6,300'. A nice climb, long but not too steep. A photo from the top, looking across the water to Tenerife, our next island in a couple days.
Next we had a long drop, with a number of intermediate climbs, but the road was so bad that we just got beat up. But, we went through pine forests and a lot of wild flowers; this side of the island is not as arid. Another random scenic photo:
Then, the perfectly named Valley...Of...The...Tears climb.Lots of continuous 15%+, with some over 20%. Usually I would criss-cross the road to lessen the grade, but the road was not very wide, and in bad shape, lots of gravel etc. Virtually no cars or bicycles on this climb. Plus we were were expecting someplace to stop for water, but nothing there, so we started the climb with empty bottles. Here's what the start of the climb looks like:
That was a hard ride today; fortunately tomorrow will be much easier!
