Nice enough first day after arriving yesterday at Mondello, a small seaside town close to Palermo:
While our hotel has seen better days, and there's a garbageman strike on the island providing occasional large piles of roadside garbage, we had a good first day on the bikes. Some bumpy roads and busy towns, but lots of quiet time also. We headed inland for a while to get some hills in, then back to the sea. Passed a couple castles and noted the Moorish influence in the architecture.
Weather is perfect for riding, low 70s though cool at night. Besides a little fun drafting a 3-wheel work truck, and later 3 Sicilian riders (no one wears helmets here), it was just a good ride to loosen up the legs after the long plane flights. Our hotel tonight is in a smaller town on the coast; very pleasant and quaint:
