Day 1

48 Miles 4,500’

St. Jean de Luz to St. Jean Pied de Port

Starting by meeting with the Trek Travel guys at 10:00 to get bikes fitted and tweaked up. There are five of us on the trip (one no-show):

A somewhat late start, warm and humid, with a couple cat 3 climbs (Puerto de Otxondo and Col d’Ispeguy), with a nice picnic lunch in between the climbs. Dropped into Spain for a few miles before returning to France for the remainder of the ride. Here’s a shot of the second downhill:

Overall, a nice “warm-up” ride for the trip, as we headed into Basque country. We finished late due to the late start and a long lunch, then there was some confusion with my hotel room that needed to get resolved. Then we went for some wine and chacuterie at a small place in town; here’s a shot nearby:

Then it was onto dinner at a Michelin 2-star restaurant, which was very good and long. By the time we finished, I went straight to bed, so I never got a chance to update until now.
